What to say? You guys had a great wedding. Such ruach during the dancing. I mean, I though Steve was going to get bounced right out of that chair. It was such an honor to be a part of your wedding Levana and Steve. It was, simply, beautiful.

Central Park New York Engagement Portraits- Dana and Josh

After so many emails it was nice to meet Dana and Josh, whose wedding I am shooting in August, this past Monday for an engagement portrait session in Central Park. While a bit windy it was, nonetheless, a great early spring afternoon. We spent a couple of hours walking around the park. The cherry blossoms were in bloom. I am glad we went on a Monday as the crowds were manageable and it almost appears as if nobody else but Dana and Josh were in the park that day.

Family Portraits in Washington D.C.- Matthew

Matthew turned 6-months old when I took his photo the other day, and for his trouble he got a camera in his face. Well, he did marvelously despite not having a nap. He smiled just like his Mom said he would, and was generally just great during the whole session. It was great fun and wonderful to see new parents Rob and Lauren again.

Three months ago I photographed Gabriel’s bris, now look at the kid. He has gotten big, and dapper with that bow tie. He might not be able to sit up and he was not in a smiling mood but I think we got some photos for the trouble. Eden, what can be said? Always a star. You guys were great.

Intimate Wedding at home in Chevy Chase- Julia and Bob

My last wedding of 2011 was a beautiful end to a great year.

With everybody shoulder to shoulder in the living room the chuppah ceremony was like a great big hug. Julia and Bob were surrounded by their closest friends and family in their home. Their children held up the chuppah. Parents and long time friends made the toasts. Even a surgeon was called in to cut the cake. Nothing was left to chance.

Hanukah and Christmas were just around the corner. I can think of no better entry into the holiday season than this. Congratulations Julia and Bob!

Christopher Hitchens- A great mind departed

My editor warned me before I went to Christopher Hitchens’ apartment that he hates, HATES, to be photographed. I found him to be perfectly comfortable and interesting. His airy apartment had nothing on the walls but bookshelves and more bookshelves. All of the artwork rested on the floor. I have enjoyed reading him for years whether I agreed with him or not. His words will certainly be missed.

Surrounded by your loving parents, Octavia and Arthur, your doting sister, Eden, and family from near and far, you were welcomed into Jewish family. With three rabbis on hand, Rabbi Burg, Rabbi Konheim, and Rabbi Henesh, you were in good hands.

Family Portraits in Rock Creek Park, Washington DC- Katie and Dov

We may have missed the fall leaves still on the trees but at least we got them on the ground. An open field, sticks, fences, and unseasonably warm weather combined for a lovely little portrait session on Sunday. The kids were great, though I think there may have been some bribery involved. HIstoric Orthodox Gay Wedding at Sixth and I, Washington D.C.- Ron and Yoni

Ron and Yoni did something many people have been waiting a long time to see. They got married. Under a chuppah. By an orthodox rabbi. In so many ways their wedding was like so many others and, whether it was the first gay orthodox wedding or the hundredth, it was a spiritually moving wedding to be a part of. I want to thank Ron and Yoni for letting me capture the essence of what was a powerful day. The ruach at your wedding was out of this world. From the word go, there was singing and dancing, tears and joy. It was a beautiful day.

Lila’s Bat Mitzvah- Washington Hebrew Congregation

It was said over, and over again, on Saturday how appropriate it was the you recited bereshit as your torah portion. You earned it and you did the portion, your family, friends, and yourself proud with your recitation. Lancaster Wedding- Becca and Ben at the Ware Center, Millersville University

Even Occupy Lancaster made way for Becca and Ben’s wedding on Saturday. The square in front of the Marriott was filled with protesters as Becca and Ben got ready but by the time we were set for portraits nary a sign remained. We got to spend some time taking photos in the central market as the sun went down to great effect. It was so simple yet so beautiful. I love fall light.

From there we went to the Ware Center at Millersville University for the ceremony, on stage of course, and the party. So many tender moments, from the “hand” made chuppa and Becca’s father on the cello, to raucous toasts and partying. Not a spare inch of floor space remained on the dance floor it was so packed. Truly an incredible day.

A shout out to wedding planner Jonnaysa Kirkham who helped keep everything running smoothly. And who can forget the delicious Achenabch pastries for dessert. The shop might not be all that convenient to anybody in DC or Baltimore but the peanut butter long johns are worth the drive.

Family Portraits- Bethesda Row

After five years, and two kids, I reconnected with Caron and Kenny on a recent Sunday to take some family portraits. We met at Bethesda Row and thankfully a week full of rain subsided long enough to get a few snaps. It is so nice catching up with people whose weddings I photographed. Watching their families grow is a true joy.

Baltimore, er, Relay, MD Wedding- Caroline and Howard

Hurricane Irene’s winds threw the entire east coast for a loop last week and even managed to knock a wedding backwards by two-days. Last Friday was supposed to just be the Friday before the Sunday wedding but with Irene rushing up the coast Caroline and Howard managed to move everything up as well. You would not have known that the date and location were all wrong, at least according to the invitation, because everything went so right come Friday night.

Amazingly, the caterer and band were able to come. Most of the guests made it too. I expected a small ceremony on their front porch with a pizza delivery guy serving the food. Was I surprised to photograph a full wedding with wedding cake (made by a friend) and all. I am still amazed a week later.

Caroline, Howard, you guys are amazing. My hat is off to you for pulling it off, not being stressed, and just going with the flow of the day. I hope the flexibility and resourcefulness that helped you on Friday stays with you both the rest of your lives.
